Habitat
Open woodlands and savanna, especially near water. Plantations.

Range (Guide)

Angola, Botswana, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania [United Republic of], Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Kenya.

South-central Africa, from Angola east through southern Zaire to south-central Tanzania (including Zanzibar and Pemba), and south to northern Namibia, northern Botswana and north-eastern South Africa.

Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010).

Insects, especially grasshoppers, reptiles, amphibians. Occasionally small birds, bats, snakes and rodents.

Nest
A scrape or depression, unlined, in the crown of a dead palm or in a hole of a tree.

Eggs (Guide)
1 - 4; cream with reddish-brown markings. Incubation: about 30 days; by female.

Young
Fledge in 33 - 35 days.

Subspecies
Sometimes united in subgenus Dissodectes with other grey kestrels Grey Kestrel (Falco ardosiaceus) and Banded Kestrel (Falco zoniventris). Most similar in size and proportions to Banded Kestrel (Falco zoniventris).

No subspecies.
