Subspecies
Formerly thought to form a superspecies with Eurasian Eagle-Owl (Bubo bubo). Subspecies mackinderi has been considered a full species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
dillonii Des Murs & Prévost, 1846 - Southern Eritrea and Ethiopian Highlands.
mackinderi Sharpe, 1899 - From west-central Kenya south to Zimbabwe and western Mozambiqe.
capensis Smith, 1834 - South Africa and extreme southern Namibia.
