Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest, lowland moist shrubland. From 450 - 3,700 m.

Range (Guide)
Angola, Burundi, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Namibia.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Grey Woodpecker (Dendropicos goertae) and Grey-headed Woodpecker (Dendropicos spodocephalus), interbreeding where ranges meet.

Proposed subspecies persimilis (Angola to northern Malawi) inseparable from ruwenzori.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • ruwenzori (Sharpe, 1902)   -  Angolan highlands, and eastern Zaire and south-western Uganda (Ruwenzoris and Impenetrable Forest), south to north-central and north-eastern Namibia, south-central Zambia and northern Malawi.
  • kilimensis (Neumann, 1926)   -  Tanzanian highlands: Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru, and mountains of northern Pare, Usambara, Uluguru and Udzungwa.
  • griseocephalus (Boddaert, 1783)   -  Extreme southern Mozambique (Lebombo Mts) and eastern and southern South Africa (eastern Natal to southern Cape Province).
