Dry savanna. From sea-level - 3,000 m.

Angola, Botswana, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Subspecies
Subspecies knwon to intergrade.

Proposed subspecies saturatus (western Central African Republic) and decipiens (south-western Uganda and southern Kenya south to central Tanzania) inseparable from nominate.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • namaquus (Lichtenstein, 1793)   -  Western Central African Republic east to southern Sudan, Uganda and western and southern Kenya, and from western and southern Angola across to south-eastern Zaire and Tanzania, south to western and central Namibia, Botswana, northern South Africa and northern and central Mozambique.
  • schoensis (Rüppell, 1842)   -  Ethiopia, north-western and southern Somalia and northern Kenya.
  • coalescens (Clancey, 1958)   -  Central and southern Mozambique and eastern South Africa.
