Subspecies
Subspecies maxima, known only from 2 specimens from northern Ivory Coast, doubtfully valid, possibly only larger form of nominate. Latter intergrades with subspecies herberti, the resultant intermediates formerly known as subspecies efulenensis; yalensis (western Kenya) synonymized with herberti.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
nivosa (Swainson, 1837) - Senegambia east to Cameroon and western Zaire and south to north-western Angola and north-western Zambia.
maxima Traylor, 1970 - Northern Ivory Coast.
poensis Alexander, 1903 - Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
herberti (Alexander, 1908) - Southern Central African Republic and extreme south-western Sudan (Bangangai Forest) to western Kenya (Kakamega and southern Nandi Forests) and south to south-central and eastern Zaire.
