Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Northern Pintail (Anas acuta). Subspecies niceforoi, described in 1946, considered to be extinct by 1956. Subspecies spinicauda sometimes considered full species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
spinicauda Vieillot, 1816 - Extreme southern Colombia southwards to Tierra del Fuego, and eastwards to eastern Argentina; Falkland Is.
