Subspecies
Birds from Cordillera de Cutucú (south-eastern Ecuador), though tentatively included with similarly plumaged Peruvian subspecies canicauda, are isolated from nearest population of latter by an area occupied by nominate subspecies, and probably represent an independent lineage. Further study is required.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
squamigera Prévost & Des Murs, 1842 - Andes from western Venezuela (Mérida) and all three ranges of Colombia south to southern Ecuador.
canicauda Chapman, 1926 - South-eastern Ecuador (Cordillera de Cutucú). Also Peru in Cajamarca (Chira) and from southern and east of R Marañón to central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
