Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

koenigi (Arndt, 1995) - North-eastern Colombia and northern Venezuela.
neoxenus (Cory, 1909) - Margarita Island (off Venezuela).
haemorrhous (von Spix, 1824) - Interior north-eastern Brazil.
neumanni (Blake & Traylor, 1947) - Upland eastern Bolivia.
acuticaudatus (Vieillot, 1818) - Eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and south-western and southern Brazil to western Uruguay (extinct?) and northern Argentina.
nigrirostris Arndt, 1996 - Isla Margarita (Venezuela).
