Derivation
Lal'-a-ge - Lalage, girl's name (classical): lëüc-o-pyg'-i-a - Gk, leucos, white; Gk, pyge, rump, tail

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest. Also, subtropical and tropical montane moist forest, heavily degraded former forest.

Range (Guide)
New Caledonia, Norfolk Island (E) (B), Solomon Islands, Vanuatu.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Voice
Call is a short rasping note. Song is a loud melodious 'tee-zeeia-tee-zeeia-tee-zeeia'.

Nest
Shallow, cup-shaped, composed of moss, lichen and root fibers, lined with similar finer material, in a tree or bush.

Eggs (Guide)
Usually 2, occasionally 3; pale green, tinged slightly grey, with thick, irregularly shaped longitudinal marks of different shades of olive-brown and sparse freckles, and dull bluish-grey markings on the larger end; oval; 22 x 17 mm.

Subspecies
Nominate subspecies is extinct.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • leucopyga ! (Gould, 1838)   -  Norfolk Island. Extinct.
  • affinis (Tristram, 1879)   -  South-eastern Solomon Is (San Cristobal, Uki).
  • deficiens Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Torres Is and Banks Is.
  • albiloris Mayr & Ripley, 1941   -  Northern and central Vanuatu.
  • simillima (Sarasin, 1913)   -  Southern Vanuatu and Loyalty Is.
  • montrosieri Verreaux, J & Des Murs, 1860   -  New Caledonia.
