Subspecies
Close to and possibly conspecific with Red-billed Woodcreeper (Hylexetastes perrotii), having similarities in voice and morphology. Characters of subspecies insignis suggest possible intergradation between the two species. Has apparently hybridized intergenerically with Black-banded Woodcreeper (Dendrocolaptes picumnus) in western Brazil, one of few cases of hybridization in suboscines.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
insignis Zimmer, JT, 1934 - Extreme north-western corner of Amazonian Brazil on northern bank of R Uaupés; sight records from adjacent Colombia (Vaupés) require verification.
stresemanni Snethlage, 1925 - North-western Amazonia, in Brazil from lower R Negro south to R Solimíµes (western limit unknown).
undulatus Todd, 1925 - South-western Amazonia, south of Amazon, in eastern Peru (upper R Ucayali), northern Bolivia (Pando) and north-western Brazil (east to at least R Purús, probably to R Madeira).
