Subspecies
In past, on occasion placed in separate genus Leucopitta. Alternatively, sometimes placed with the Eucichla group. However, appears to be most closely related to Schneider's Pitta (Hydrornis schneideri) and Giant Pitta (Hydrornis caeruleus).
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cyaneus (Blyth, 1843) - Eastern Bangladesh, north-eastern India (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam) and Myanmar (except northern) east to southern China (southern Yunnan) and south to Tenasserim and southern Thailand, also north-eastern Laos and Vietnam (southern Tonkin south to central Annam).
aurantiaca Delacour and Jabouille, 1928 - South-eastern Thailand and south-western Cambodia.
willoughbyi (Delacour, 1926) - Central Laos to southern Annam.
