Habitat
Pelagic. Also, coastal inshore waters, subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest.
Fiji (B).
Unknown to American Samoa (B), Cook Islands (B), Samoa (B).
Fiji and Cook Is. Possibly also Vanuatu, Samoa, Solomon Is.

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 10,000 (2011) and decreasing.
Status VU
Predation by introduced mammals, especially the mongoose Herpestes auropunctatus is thought to be the main threat.

Food
Not well known, but is thought to be chiefly cephalopods and fish.
Voice
A staccacto 'ti-ti-ti', uttered in flight, a low moan, a thick low purring. Also a 'cher-cher'.
Nest
In burrows on steep, well-forested slopes, from 100 - 500 m above sea-level.
Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Gould's Petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- brevipes (Peale, 1848) - South-western.
- magnificens Bretagnolle & Shirihai, 2010 - Suspected to breed in the Banks Islands, northern Vanuatu; nonbreeding distribution unknown.
Similar Species
Distinguished from other Cookilaria species by the broad dark leading margin to the underwing. Tail longer in relation to wing than in Gould's Petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera).
