(Kinnear, 1928)

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From 300 - 1,800 m.

Range (Guide)
Vanuatu (B) (NB).

Banks Is (Ureparapara, Vanua Lava, Gaua) and northern Vanuatu (Espíritu Santo, Ambae, Maewo, Pentecost, Ambrym).
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Logging and conversion of lowland forest in the main threat. Also hunting.

Voice
A powerful and far-carrying 'twoo-too-too-too-too', repeated frequently at short intervals.

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Barking Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula latrans), Chestnut-bellied Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula brenchleyi) and New Caledonian Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula goliath). This group also shows some affinities with the Pinon's Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pinon) species-group.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Pacific Imperial-Pigeon (Ducula pacifica) which has swollen black cere, paler grey head and underparts, chestnut only on vent and green-glossed dark grey upperparts and with Metallic Pigeon (Columba vitiensis) which has a white throat-patch and green iridescence on an otherwise black plumage.
