Derivation
Anas - L., duck: gra'-ci-lis - L., graceful

Habitat
Streams, swamps and lagoons, both inland and near the coast, usually congregating in large numbers.

Range (Guide)
Australia (B), Indonesia, New Caledonia, New Zealand (B), Papua New Guinea (B), Solomon Islands (PE), Vanuatu.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2014) and decreasing.

Food
Aquatic animals and vegatation.

Voice
Female, a loud, penetrating quack, repeated rapidly like a hoarse laugh, with the pitch falling. Male, a loud burp 'gdeeu'.

Nest
Composed of grass, lined with down, in a hollow limb or among lignum or grass.

Eggs (Guide)
4 - 14, usually 7 or 8; cream, becoming stained; oval; 54 x 39 mm. Incubation: 24 - 26 days; by female.

Young
Precocial, nidifugous.

Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Sunda Teal (Anas gibberifrons).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • gracilis Buller, 1869   -  Widespread. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Sunda Teal (Anas gibberifrons).
  • remissa Ripley, 1942   -  Rennell I, Solomon Is. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Sunda Teal (Anas gibberifrons).
