Subspecies
Dark-plumaged birds from western Himalayas sometimes separated as subspecies euphonia.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
strophiata (Hodgson, 1837) - Breeds Himalayas from western Himachal Pradesh east to north-eastern India (eastern Arunachal Pradesh, southern Assam, Meghalaya and Nagaland), central and southern China (south-eastern Xizang east to south-western Gansu, Shaanxi, western Hubei, Sichuan, Guizhou and northern and western Yunnan), south-eastern Bangladesh (Chittagong Hills) and western and northern Myanmar. Non-breeding also southern China (western and southern Yunnan, Guangxi), central and southern Myanmar and north-western and northern Thailand.
fuscogularis (Baker, ECS, 1923) - Eastern Laos and central Vietnam (southern Annam).
