Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, subtropical and tropical moist lowland and swamp forest. From sea-level - 1,000 m.

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Molecular data indicate that this genus and Chrysothlypis are closely related and probably sister-taxa, and that Heterospingus also is closely related to them. Some subspecies of present species only weakly defined and possibly not worthy of retention, e.g. insignis perhaps not distinct from melanoxantha. A thorough review required.

The following 11 subspecies are recognised:

  • ornata Nelson, 1912   -  Pacific slope from extreme eastern Panama (eastern Darién) south to northern Chocó, in Colombia.
  • albigularis (Sclater, PL, 1855)   -  Northern Colombia from R Sinú east to middle Magdalena Valley in Antioquia and Santander.
  • peruana Bonaparte, 1851   -  Eastern of Andes in Colombia (from Meta) south through eastern Ecuador to Peru northern of R Marañón and R Amazon (Amazonas and Loreto).
  • aurigularis Cherrie, 1916   -  South-eastern Colombia, southern Venezuela (southern of R Orinoco), and northern Brazil (in upper R Uaupés and R Negro).
  • hellmayri von Berlepsch, 1912   -  South-eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolí­var) and western Guyana (Merumé Mts).
  • flavicollis (Vieillot, 1818)   -  Suriname, French Guiana and north-eastern Brazil (northern of R Amazon).
  • obidensis Parkes & Humphrey, 1963   -  Northern bank of lower R Amazon in Brazil.
  • sororia Zimmer, JT, 1947   -  Northern and eastern Peru southern of R Marañón.
  • centralis (Hellmayr, 1907)   -  South-eastern Peru, northern and Central Bolivia and SC Brazil (eastern to northern Mato Grosso).
  • melanoxantha (Lichtenstein, MHK, 1823)   -  Coastal eastern Brazil (Pernambuco and Bahia).
  • insignis (Sclater, PL, 1856)   -  South-eastern Brazil (Espí­rito Santo and Rio de Janeiro).
