Habitat
Subtropical and tropical montane moist forest. From 1,600 - 2,700 m, occasionally 1,000 - 3,700 m.

Bhutan, China (mainland), India, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Vietnam.

Estimated population is unknown (2020) and stable.

Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been subsumed in Cissa, but three members of latter seem to form a distinctive group. Forms a superspecies with Taiwan Blue Magpie (Urocissa caerulea) and Red-billed Blue Magpie (Urocissa erythroryncha). Subspecies cucullata intergrades with nominate in central Nepal.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

cucullata Gould, 1861 - Northern Pakistan (from Hazara) east through north-western India to Nepal.
flavirostris (Blyth, 1846) - Nepal east to north-eastern India and northern Myanmar, also in adjacent southern China (extreme south-eastern Xizang).
schaeferi Sick, 1939 - Western Myanmar (Chin Hills).
robini Delacour & Jabouille, 1930 - Extreme northern Vietnam (north-western Tonkin).
