Habits
Singly or in twos or threes. Occasionally small family parties.

Food
Insects.

Voice
Loud, clear, far carrying, usually beginning with several loud, piercing, high notes, followed by whistled, descending trills. Often repeated.

Nest
Pair-shaped, with a hooded entrance near the top, and a tail piece, composed of fine bark strips bound with cobweb, lined with plant-down and feathers, usualy attached to a thin, leafy branch of a eucalypt sapling from 1 - 20 meters above the ground.

Eggs (Guide)
2 - 3; white or pink-white, heavily spotted, blotched, freckled red, red-purple, forming a zone at the larger end; oval; about 18 x 13 mm. Incubation: about 15 - 16 days; usually by female.

Young
Altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 15 - 19 days.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • olivacea (Gould, 1838)   -  Eastern Australia, from the base of Cape York Peninsula, Qld, south and west to the western slopes of the Great Divide and south-eastern and south-central Vic.
  • cinerascens Sharpe, 1878   -  Northern and central Cape York Peninsual, south to Princess Charlotte Bay and Lower Mitchell River, Qld and south-eastern New Guinea.
  • rogersi Mathews, 1911   -  Northern Australia, north of the eucalypt line, from south-western Kimberley Divide, WA east to the south-eastern head of Gulf of Carpenatria, Qld.
