Closely related to Golden-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola aureopectus), Black-chested Fruiteater (Pipreola lubomirskii) and Masked Fruiteater (Pipreola pulchra), and all sometimes treated as conspecific, but plumages distinct. Geographical range overlap, but without intergradation, between present species and Golden-breasted Fruiteater (Pipreola aureopectus) in south-western Colombia (Nariño).
