Subspecies
Apparent racial variation may be clinal.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

aleuticus (Pallas, 1811) - Aleutian Is to south-western and south-eastern Alaska, then south to northern Baja California (San Geronimo, San Martin and Guadalupe Is).
australis van Rossem, 1939 - Western Baja California from San Benito Is south to Asuncion and San Roque Is.
