Habitat
Subtropical and tropical mangroves, moist forests, shrublands. Also dry forest, rural gardens, plantations.

Range (Guide)
Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, China (mainland), India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam.

Unknown to Afghanistan.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies identity of birds on Sumbawa and Lomblen (Lesser Sundas) uncertain, provisionally included in sejuncta.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

  • calochrysea Oberholser, 1923   -  Himalayas from northern Pakistan (Murree Hills) and Kashmir east to north-east, central and central-eastern India, Bangladesh, central and southern China, Myanmar (except southern Tenasserim), Thailand (except south-western and south) and northern and central Indochina. Non-breeding from central and southern Pakistan (Indus Valley) through plains of northern and central India to southern China and Indochina.
  • ceylonensis (Swainson, 1820)   -  South-western India and Sri Lanka.
  • antioxantha Oberholser, 1923   -  Southern Myanmar (southern Tenasserim), south-western and southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, Java and Bali.
  • sejuncta Hartert, 1897   -  Sumbawa, Flores and Lomblen, in Lesser Sundas.
  • connectens Rensch, 1931   -  Sumba, in Lesser Sundas.
