South-western Venezuela (Táchira, Apure) south through eastern Colombia (Meta), eastern Ecuador and eastern Peru, Brazil (locally north of R Amazon on R Branco, in Roraima, more extensively south of Amazon east to Ceará, Pernambuco and western Bahia) south to central and eastern Bolivia, Chaco of Paraguay, northern and eastern Argentina (south to Santiago del Estero, Santa Fe and Buenos Aires) and western Uruguay (locally along R Uruguay).

Formerly included in genus Archiplanus. Often placed in genus Cacicus, but analysis of mitochondrial DNA indicates that this species is more closely related to Psarocolius than to other caciques.
