Subspecies
Molecular data suggest that genus is part of a clade which includes Haplospiza, as well as Plumbeous Sierra-Finch (Geospizopsis unicolor) and Ash-breasted Sierra-Finch (Geospizopsis plebejus) (but not other members of latter genus).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
mucuchiesi Phelps & Gilliard, 1941 - páramos of Mérida, in western Venezuela.
minor von Berlepsch, 1885 - Western Venezuela (Táchira) south through Andes of Colombia (eastern and central ranges) and Ecuador to central Peru (Junín).
inornata (Lafresnaye, 1847) - Andes of south-western Peru (Cuzco and Puno) and extreme northern Chile (northern Tarapacá) east to central Bolivia and north-western Argentina (south to central Mendoza).
cordobensis Nores & Yzurieta, 1983 - North-central Argentina (Córdoba).
