Subspecies
Molecular data strongly indicate that genus belongs in tanager family (Thraupidae) and is sister to a group containing Lanio, Fulvous-crested Tanager (Maschalethraupis surinama), Trichothraupis and Eucometis. Sometimes considered conspecific with Red-crested Finch (Coryphospingus cucullatus). Hybrids between the two reported in Brazil.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
brevicaudus Cory, 1916 - Northern Colombia (Santa Marta Mts) and northern Venezuela from Zulia east, including Margarita I, to Sucre and south to northern Bolívar.
rostratus Miller, AH, 1947 - Upper Magdalena Valley, in Colombia.
pileatus (Wied, 1821) - Central and eastern Brazil from central Mato Grosso east to southern Maranhío and Ceará, south to Goiás, eastern Minas Gerais and Rio de Janeiro.
