Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest.
Brazil (B), French Guiana (B), Suriname (B), Venezuela (B).
Southern Venezuela (eastern and southern Amazonas east of R Orinoco, and southern Bolívar), south-western Guyana and northern Brazil (north of R Amazon, from R Negro east to central Pará; south of R Amazon, from lower and middle R Tapajós east to east of R Xingu); old records from south-western Suriname and eastern French Guiana; recent records north-eastern Peru (local) and eastern Colombia (sight record near Inírida, in Guainía).

Genetic data indicate that this species and Yellow-bellied Tanager (Tangara xanthogastra ), Spotted Tanager (Tangara punctata ), Speckled Tanager (Tangara guttata ) and Rufous-throated Tanager (Tangara rufigula ) form a species group.
