Subspecies
Recent molecular-genetic data indicate that this genus may be unrelated (or, at least, not closely related) to any other in present family. Affiliations uncertain, and no closely related family or sister-taxon yet identified. Subspecies very weakly differentiated and species may be better treated as monotypic.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
obscuripectus Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1945 - Sierra de Lema and cerros of the Gran Sabana (except Roraima area), in south-eastern Bolívar region of south-eastern Venezuela, south to northern Brazil (on Uei-tepui).
oleagineus (Salvin, 1886) - Extreme south-eastern Venezuela (vicinity of Mt Roraima) and adjacent Guyana (on Mt Twek-quay); probably also tepui slopes in adjacent Brazil.
