Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, swamp forest, heavily degraded former forest. From sea-level - 1,200 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Recent molecular data indicate that present genus, Schistochlamys and Neothraupis are one another's closest relatives.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • leverianus (Gmelin, 1788)   -  Western and eastern Venezuela (on both slopes of Andes, and south of R Orinoco) east to French Guiana and Brazil (northern Roraima), also Colombia (eastern slope of Andes southern from Norte de Santander) south to Bolivia (Santa Cruz) and eastern across Brazil south of Amazon to central Mato Grosso, south-eastern Pará and southern Maranhío. Also extreme eastern Brazil (Alagoas, possibly also Pernambuco).
  • major Cabanis, 1851   -  South-eastern Brazil (Goiás and Bahia south to northern Rio Grande do Sul), eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
