Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 2,000 - 2,800 m, occasionally 1,200 - 3,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been placed in Coerebidae or Parulidae, but molecular-genetic data indicate that it belongs in present family, with Oreomanes as sister-group. Dark-crowned subspecies atrocyaneum, sordidum and lugens have sometimes been regarded as representing a separate species.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • cyanonotum Todd, 1932   -  Northern Venezuela (coastal cordillera of Aragua, Vargas and Distrito Federal).
  • albifrons Lafresnaye, 1842   -  Western Venezuela (Andes of southern Táchira) and western slope of eastern Andes of Colombia (south to latitude of Bogotá).
  • centralandium Meyer de Schauensee, 1946   -  Central Andes of Colombia (Antioquia south to western Huila, and on eastern slope in Nariño).
  • atrocyaneum Lafresnaye, 1848   -  Western Andes of Colombia (Antioquia southern on western slope to Nariño) south through Ecuador to northern Peru (Piura and Cajamarca).
  • sordidum von Berlepsch, 1901   -  Andes of central Peru (from Juní­n) south to northern Bolivia (La Paz).
  • lugens von Berlepsch, 1901   -  Andes of Bolivia (Cochabamba and Santa Cruz).
