Subspecies
Genus has sometimes been placed in Coerebidae or Parulidae, but molecular-genetic data indicate that it belongs in present family, with Oreomanes as sister-group. Dark-crowned subspecies atrocyaneum, sordidum and lugens have sometimes been regarded as representing a separate species.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
cyanonotum Todd, 1932 - Northern Venezuela (coastal cordillera of Aragua, Vargas and Distrito Federal).
albifrons Lafresnaye, 1842 - Western Venezuela (Andes of southern Táchira) and western slope of eastern Andes of Colombia (south to latitude of Bogotá).
centralandium Meyer de Schauensee, 1946 - Central Andes of Colombia (Antioquia south to western Huila, and on eastern slope in Nariño).
atrocyaneum Lafresnaye, 1848 - Western Andes of Colombia (Antioquia southern on western slope to Nariño) south through Ecuador to northern Peru (Piura and Cajamarca).
sordidum von Berlepsch, 1901 - Andes of central Peru (from Junín) south to northern Bolivia (La Paz).
lugens von Berlepsch, 1901 - Andes of Bolivia (Cochabamba and Santa Cruz).
