Subspecies
Often placed together with Flavescent Warbler (Myiothlypis flaveola), White-rimmed Warbler (Myiothlypis leucoblephara), White-striped Warbler (Myiothlypis leucophrys) and Buff-rumped Warbler (Myiothlypis fulvicauda) in a separate genus, Phaeothlypis. Forms a superspecies with Buff-rumped Warbler (Myiothlypis fulvicauda) and sometimes considered conspecific, but songs differ and it seems likely that the obvious buff rump and tail of the latter species would prevent interbreeding should the two ever come into contact.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
mesoleuca (Sclater, PL, 1865) - Eastern Venezuela, the Guianas and northern Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Riverbank Warbler (Myiothlypis mesoleuca).
boliviana Sharpe, 1885 - Foothills of Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz and Tarija).
