Habitat
Upper and lower montane humid forest, open coffee groves (under the forest canopy), secondary growth and especially at the forest edge. From 800 - 1,150 m, occasionally down to 400 m.
Paria Peninsula (north-eastern Sucre), in north-eastern Venezuela.
 
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status EN
Habitat destruction and degradation through clearance for cash-crops is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Considered closest to and presumed to form a superspecies with Tepui Redstart (Myioborus castaneocapilla), Saffron-breasted Redstart (Myioborus cardonai) and White-faced Redstart (Myioborus albifacies). Originally described as a subspecies of Brown-capped Whitestart (Myioborus brunniceps), but now generally afforded species status.
Similar Species
Slate-throated Redstart (Myioborus miniatus) lacks yellow facial features and has dark throat.
