Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form a superspecies with Ochre-breasted Brush-Finch (Atlapetes semirufus) and Fulvous-headed Brush-finch (Atlapetes fulviceps). Likely closely related to former, but latter may not belong in such a group.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

paraquensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1946 - Cerro Paraque and Cerro Yavi, in north-western and north-eastern Amazonas (southern Venezuela).
parui Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1950 - Cerro Par�, in north-central Amazonas (southern Venezuela).
duidae Chapman, 1929 - Tepui region of southern Venezuela, in central Amazonas (Mt Duida) and west-central Bol��var (Mt Guaiquinima).
jugularis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1955 - Cerro La Neblina in southern Venezuela (south-eastern Amazonas) and adjacent northern Brazil (Amazonas).
collaris Chapman, 1939 - Mt Auyan-tepui, in south-eastern Bol��var (south-eastern Venezuela).
personatus (Cabanis, 1848) - Mt Roraima and nearby tepuis of south-eastern Bol��var, in south-eastern Venezuela.
