Subspecies
Formerly placed with Yellow-browed Sparrow (Ammodramus aurifrons) in a separate genus, Myospiza and both sometimes considered to form a superspecies, but ranges overlap sufficiently to make such treatment implausible. Genetic studies indicate that the two are closely related to Grasshopper Sparrow (Ammodramus savannarum), which is, in turn, distant from other six species currently included in genus. These last should perhaps be reassigned to a different genus.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
pallidulus (Wetmore, 1949) - Guajira Peninsula of northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela.
humeralis (Bosc, 1792) - Colombia and Venezuela (except Guajira Peninsula), and the Guianas east to eastern Brazil (south to Paraná).
xanthornus Gould, 1839 - Extreme south-eastern Peru (Pampas del Heath) and north-eastern Bolivia east through south-central Brazil to Paraguay and Uruguay and south to central Argentina.
tarijensis (Bond & Meyer de Schauensee, 1939) - South-eastern Bolivia (Santa Cruz, Tarija and Chuquisaca).
