Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Giant Wren (Campylorhynchus chiapensis), but very widely separated geographically.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • albicilius (Bonaparte, 1854)   -  Northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela (Macaraibo Basin, Falcón, Lara, western Trujillo).
  • bicolor (Pelzeln, 1875)   -  Upper Magdalena Valley and western slope of eastern Andes in Santander and Boyacá (Colombia).
  • minor (Cabanis, 1850)   -  Lowlands of northern Venezuela (Cojedes and Apure east to Sucre and Monagas, south to northern Bolí­var) and eastern Colombia (Meta).
  • pallidus Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1947   -  Northern Amazonas, in Venezuela.
  • griseus (Swainson, 1837)   -  Eastern Venezuela (north-western Amazonas, north-western Bolí­var), south-western Guyana and extreme northern Brazil (Roraima).
  • zimmeri Borrero & Hernández-Camacho, 1958   -  Colombia (Huila and Tolima).
