Subspecies
Grey-headed subspecies griseiceps and phaeopleurus sometimes considered to represent a separate species. Subspecies sierrae sometimes merged into nominate. Described subspecies aenopennis (from northern Sinaloa and south-western Chihuahua, in Mexico), bangsi (El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala) and russatus (mountains of south-western Costa Rica and western Panama) synonymized with, respectively, clarus, melpomene and griseiceps.
The following 14 subspecies are recognised:
clarus Jouy, 1894 - North-western and north-central Mexico.
melpomene (Cabanis, 1850) - Central and southern Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and north-western Nicaragua.
costaricensis Hellmayr, 1902 - Costa Rica.
griseiceps Salvin, 1866 - South-western Costa Rica and western and central Panama.
phaeopleurus Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1876 - Western Colombia.
sierrae Hellmayr, 1919 - Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, in northern Colombia.
aurantiirostris (Hartlaub, 1850) - North-eastern Colombia and western Venezuela.
