Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry forest, dry savanna.
Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela.
Extreme eastern Colombia (southern Guainía and extreme eastern Vaupés, possibly also south-eastern Vichada), extreme southern Venezuela (western Amazonas) and extreme north-western Brazil (upper R Negro).
 
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
heilprini Gentry, 1885 - North-western, west-central Amazonia.
hafferi Cohn-Haft, Santos, Fernandes & Ribas, 2013 - South-western Amazonian Brazil, from the west bank of the Purus River to the west bank of the Madeira River. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Campina Jay (Cyanocorax hafferi ).
