Subspecies
Has been thought to form a superspecies with Purplish Jay (Cyanocorax cyanomelas), Azure Jay (Cyanocorax coeruleus) and Curl-crested Jay (Cyanocorax cristatellus).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
pallidus Zimmer, JT & Phelps, 1944 - Northern Venezuela (coast of Anzoátegui).
violaceus Du Bus de Gisignies, 1847 - South-western and southern Venezuela and south-western Guyana south to eastern Peru (south to Madre de Dios and Puno), northern Bolivia (Panda and La Paz) and northern Brazil (east to upper R Negro and lower R Purús).
