Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 900 m.

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Subspecies inornatus was formerly treated as a subspecies of Brown-headed Greenlet (Hylophilus brunneiceps).

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • hypoxantha Pelzeln, 1868   -  South-eastern Colombia (Vaupes and Guainia), south-western Venezuela (Amazonas), and north-western Brazil (south to R Solimoes).
  • fuscicapillus Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1880   -  Eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (south to R Marañón).
  • flaviventris Cabanis, 1873   -  Central Peru from San Martín (possibly from north-central Loreto) south to Ayacucho.
  • ictericus Bond, J, 1953   -  Western Brazil (upper R Jurua), extreme south-eastern Peru (Puno) and northern Bolivia (La Paz, Beni and Cochabamba).
  • albigula (Chapman, 1921)   -  Northern Brazil south of R Amazon (from R Purús east to R Iriri and R Xingu).
  • inornatus (Snethlage, E, 1914)   -  Northern Brazil south of R Amazon (from R Tapajos east to R Tocantins, south of Itaituba).
