Subspecies
Subspecies in coastal mountains of Venezuela suggested as forming a separate species, on basis of whiter belly and paler lower mandible, but vocally somewhat similar to other subspecies. Further study is needed. Proposed subspecies occidentalis (western and central Andes of Colombia) synonymized with nominate, as similar birds occur in extreme northern Peru.

olivascens Hellmayr, 1917 - Coastal mountains of Venezuela in Aragua and Distrito Federal.
cumanensis Hartert, 1900 - Coastal mountains of Venezuela in Anzoátegui and western Sucre.
pariae Phelps, Sr. and Phelps, Jr., 1949 - North-eastern Venezuela on Paria Peninsula (Cerro Humo, Cerro Azul).
nana (Lafresnaye, 1842) - Andes from Venezuela (central Trujillo to Táchira) and Colombia (Valle and Cauca in west, central chain and head of Magdalena Valley, eastern slope of eastern range) south to extreme northern Peru.
kukenamensis Chubb, C, 1918 - South-eastern Venezuela (south-eastern Gran Sabana) and western Guyana (Mt Roraima).
occidentalis Todd, 1927 - Western and Central Andes of Colombia south to northern Peru.
hallsi Donegan, 2008 - Andes of northern Colombia (Serranía de los Yariguíes, Santander).
nanitaea Donegan, 2008 - Andes of Venezuela and adjacent Colombia (Norte de Santander, Santander).
