Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
colma Boddaert, 1783 - Eastern Colombia (south of R Vaupés), southern and eastern Venezuela, the Guianas, and Brazil north of R Amazon.
nigrifrons Gould, 1855 - Eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, northern Bolivia (south to La Paz), and Brazil south of R Amazon (east to R Madeira); reported presence in southern Venezuela (Cerro Yapacana) unconfirmed.
amazonicus Hellmayr, 1902 - Brazil south of R Amazon, from R Madeira east to northern Maranhío and south to R Ji-Paraná and southern Mato Grosso.
ruficeps (von Spix, 1824) - Coastal eastern and south-eastern Brazil from Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Sul.
