Subspecies
Subspecies acedesta merged with nominate by some authors, on grounds that size variation is clinal. Birds on Caribbean slope in Costa Rica apparently belong to former subspecies, but substantiation required.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
homochroa (Sclater, 1859) - Caribbean and Pacific slopes of southern Mexico (northern and north-eastern Oaxaca, Yucatán Peninsula), southern and east to Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador (one site), Honduras and north-eastern Nicaragua.
acedesta Oberholser, 1904 - Pacific slope from south-western Nicaragua south to western Panama. Also on Caribbean slope in northern two-thirds of Costa Rica.
ruficeps Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1868 - Central and eastern Panama (eastern from eastern Chiriquí) and locally in adjacent north-western Colombia (northern Chocó).
meridionalis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1953 - Northern Colombia and north-western Venezuela (lower slopes of Perijá Mts and Cordillera de Mérida).
