Subspecies
Plumage similarities have suggested to most authors that this and Tawny-throated Leaftosser (Sclerurus mexicanus) are sister-species.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
fulvigularis Todd, 1920 - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar), the Guianas and northern Brazil (probably in Roraima).
brunnescens Todd, 1948 - South-eastern Colombia (southern from Meta and Vaupés), western Brazil north of R Amazon (east to possibly right bank of R Negro), eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of R Amazon in Amazonas, Loreto and San Martín).
furfurosus Todd, 1948 - Northern Brazil north of R Amazon (eastern from possibly R Negro).
rufigularis Pelzeln, 1868 - South of R Amazon in north-eastern Peru (northern Loreto), Brazil (Amazonas east to Maranhío, south to northern Mato Grosso) and eastern Bolivia (eastern Beni, north-eastern Santa Cruz).
