Subspecies
Considered by some authors to be sister-species of Streak-breasted Treehunter (Thripadectes rufobrunneus), despite distance between the two in current linear sequences. Population in eastern Andes of southern Colombia (in eastern Nariño) previously considered to belong to subspecies magdalenae, but probably referable to sumaco. All subspecies in Colombia and Ecuador in need of re-evaluation. Subspecies sclateri possibly intergrades with nominate in south-western Colombia.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
klagesi (Hellmayr & Seilern, 1912) - Northern Venezuela (coastal range from Carabobo east to Distrito Federal).
tachirensis Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1958 - Andes of western Venezuela (south-western Lara, south-western Táchira).
magdalenae Meyer de Schauensee, 1945 - Western Colombia (western Andes in southern Chocó, and eastern slope of central range in Antioquia and south-western Huila).
sclateri von Berlepsch, 1907 - Western Andes of south-western Colombia (Valle south to Nariño).
virgaticeps Lawrence, 1874 - Western Andes of Ecuador (Carchi south to Pichincha).
sumaco Chapman, 1925 - Eastern Andes in southern Colombia (Caquetá, eastern Nariño) and northern Ecuador (western Napo).
