Subspecies
Considered by some to form a superspecies with A. sclateri and A. anthoides. Possibly best treated as conspecific with first of those, as birds in L Titicaca region (Peru-Bolivia border) appear to be intergrades between the two; southern subspecies (azuay, graminicola) formerly treated as a separate species, and they may indeed be more closely related to A. sclateri than to other taxa in present species. Species limits of both in need of careful revision. Subspecies mucuchiesi considered doubtfully distinct from nominate by some authors. Racial identity of birds reported in northern Peru unknown; tentatively included within azuay.
The following 8 subspecies are recognised:
sanctaemartae Todd, 1950 - Northern Colombia (Santa Marta Mts).
perijana Phelps, Jr., 1977 - Sierra de Perijá (Colombia/Venezuela border).
mucuchiesi Phelps & Gilliard, 1941 - Andes of western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida).
wyatti (Sclater & Salvin, 1871) - Eastern Andes of northern Colombia (northern Santander).
aequatorialis (Chapman, 1921) - Western Andes of central Ecuador (Cotopaxi south to Chimborazo).
azuay (Chapman, 1923) - Andes of southern Ecuador (Azuay, Zamora-Chinchipe, northern Loja) and northern Peru (sight records from Piura, Cajamarca, Ancash).
graminicola (Sclater, PL, 1874) - Andes of central and southern Peru (Junín south to Puno).
phelpsi Chesser, 2016 - Sierra de Perijá (Colombia/Venezuela border).
