Subspecies
Genus appears not to represent a monophyletic grouping, but traditional arrangement maintained pending further phylogenetic study. Close relationship with Scalloped Antbird (Myrmoderus ruficauda), White-bibbed Antbird (Myrmoderus loricatus) and Squamate Antbird (Myrmoderus squamosus) suggested by similarities in plumage, vocalizations and nest architecture.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
ferrugineus (Müller, 1776) - Eastern Venezuela (eastern Bolívar east of R Caroní), the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian Brazil (east of R Branco and R Negro).
elutus (Todd, 1927) - South-central Amazonian Brazil between lower R Madeira and lower R Tapajós.
