Rufous-backed Stipplethroat (Epinecrophylla haematonota) [XC338203]
by Dan Lane from Rio Yuracyacu E of Santa Cruz, Loreto, Peru (call, song, aggressive song)
Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Foothill Antwren (Epinecrophylla spodionota), which formerly considered conspecific, and with Yasuni Antwren (Epinecrophylla fjeldsaai). Genetic, morphological and behavioural analyses indicate that they are all part of a monophyletic group that also includes Brown-bellied Antwren (Epinecrophylla gutturalis), Checker-throated Antwren (Epinecrophylla fulviventris), White-eyed Antwren (Epinecrophylla leucophthalma), Western Ornate Antwren (Epinecrophylla ornata) and Rufous-tailed Antwren (Epinecrophylla erythrura) (the "stipple-throated antwren assemblage"), and which may not be closely related to other species placed in the genus. Morphological distinctions between nominate subspecies and amazonica possibly represent clinal variation, and geographical ranges considered tentative pending further study.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
pyrrhonota (Sclater & Salvin, 1873) - South-eastern Colombia (near base of Andes southern from Meta, and eastern Vaupés), southern Venezuela (Amazonas, Bolívar east to R Caroní drainage), extreme north-eastern Ecuador (Sucumbios), north-eastern Peru (Loreto north of R Napo and R Amazon) and north-western Brazil (R Negro drainage and northern Roraima).
haematonota (Sclater, PL, 1857) - Eastern Peru south of R Napo and Amazon (Loreto south to Madre de Dios) and western Brazil (extreme south-western Amazonas, Acre).
amazonica H. von Ihering, 1905 - South-central Amazonian Brazil (both banks of R Juruá east to both banks of R Madeira and R Jiparaná) and northern Bolivia (Pando).
fjeldsaai (Krabbe et al., 1999) - South-eastern Ecuador and extreme north-central Peru.
