Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Uniform Antshrike (Thamnophilus unicolor). A number of diagnosable subspecies, geographically separated by Amazonian rivers, may be full species. Molecular and other analyses, including of vocalizations, as well as investigation of possible intergradation at headwaters of rivers, are needed. Subspecies juruanus and kapouni appear to intergrade.

wetmorei Meyer de Schauensee, 1945 - Foothill region in south-eastern Colombia (western Meta south to eastern Cauca and western Putumayo).
aethiops Sclater, 1858 - Foothill region in eastern Ecuador and northern Peru (north of R Marañón).
polionotus Pelzeln, 1868 - Southern Venezuela (Amazonas, south-eastern Bolívar), extreme eastern Colombia (eastern Guainía, eastern Vaupés), and north-western Brazil (northern Roraima, and R Negro in upper drainage and on western bank of lower stretches south to R Solimões).
kapouni Seilern, 1913 - Eastern Peru (south of R Marañón and R Amazon), extreme western Brazil (south-western Amazonas east to R Juruá) and northern Bolivia (Pando south to La Paz and Cochabamba).
juruanus von Ihering, H, 1905 - South-western Amazonian Brazil between R Juruá and R Purus.
injunctus Zimmer, JT, 1933 - Amazonian Brazil between R Purus and R Madeira.
punctuliger Pelzeln, 1868 - Amazonian Brazil between R Madeira and R Tapajós (south to Rondônia and north-western Mato Grosso) and extreme north-eastern Bolivia (north-eastern Santa Cruz).
atriceps Todd, 1927 - Amazonia in southern Pará and north-eastern Mato Grosso (between R Tapajós and R Tocantins).
incertus Pelzeln, 1868 - Pará south of R Amazon (east of R Tocantins) and north-western Maranhío.
distans Pinto, 1954 - North-eastern Brazil (coastal Pernambuco and Alagoas).
