Extreme eastern Colombia, southern and eastern Venezuela, the Guianas, and northern and eastern Amazonian Brazil (east to western Maranhao and south to extreme northern Goias; western limit uncertain); isolated records in north-eastern Peru (San Martin) and western Brazil (Rondonia).

Subspecies
May form a superspecies with Lovely Cotinga (Cotinga amabilis), Turquoise Cotinga (Cotinga ridgwayi), Blue Cotinga (Cotinga nattererii), Plum-throated Cotinga (Cotinga maynana) and Banded Cotinga (Cotinga maculata), and all sometimes treated as conspecific. Probably closest to last of those, which similar in plumage and in male's wingtip modification.
