Subspecies
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- venezuelense (Thunberg, 1823) - Foothills of eastern Andes in western Venezuela (Táchira, Barinas) and Colombia (Boyacá).
- buckleyi (P. L. Sclater and Salvin, 1880) - Foothills of Andes in Ecuador and Peru.
- cadwaladeri Carriker, 1935 - Foothills of Andes in north-western Bolivia (La Paz).
- elegans (Thunberg, 1823) - South-eastern Brazil (southern Bahia south to São Paulo and eastern Paraná).
