Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay (B), Venezuela.
Breeds locally in central Venezuela, also northern and eastern Bolivia and central and eastern Brazil south to northern and eastern Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay; southern populations also move north to southern part of Amazon Basin in non-breeding season.

Affinities uncertain. Has sometimes been grouped with Tumbezia and Myiozetetes on basis of plumage similarities, but nest type, egg coloration and syringeal morphology provide no obvious taxonomic clues.
