Subspecies
Genus sometimes placed near Gubernetes and Muscipipra on basis of anatomical and morphological characters. Also, Polioxolmis and Cnemarchus have frequently been merged with this genus. Formerly placed with Santa Marta Bush-Tyrant (Myiotheretes pernix) and Rufous-bellied Bush-Tyrant (Myiotheretes fuscorufus) in a separate genus, Ochthodiaeta.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
olivaceus (Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1953) - Northern Colombia (Sierra de Perijá) and western Venezuela (Cerro Tetari, in western Zulia, and R Chiquito, in southern Táchira).
lugubris (von Berlepsch, 1883) - Andes of western Venezuela (Trujillo south to northern Táchira).
fumigatus (Boissonneau, 1840) - Colombia (except Santa Marta region) and northern Ecuador.
cajamarcae (Chapman, 1927) - Southern Ecuador (Cañar) and Peru (south to Cuzco).
